Speaking of music related things, recently, I’ve been pretty excited about Seattle band Kids & Animals, who I saw open for Smile Brigade on Aug. 7. They’re young enough that at least some of them weren’t allowed to stay in the bar area when they weren’t playing, but the singer has a gorgeously world-weary, cigarettes and whiskey kind of voice, and they put on a fun, exuberant live show. According to their Myspace, they’re going on hiatus after the end of August – I hope they’re back soon.

For the uninitiated, Shannon Funchess is an extraordinary artist. She’s a great singer and kick ass drummer (btw). This former lead singer of the Seattle band IMIJ (Fred Roth aka Cedric Ross from Ana Them Records was also a member of this band (1990 – ’94), how’s that for relevance?) now resides in Brooklyn. NY and can be heard on the latest !!! CD “Strange Weather, Isn’t It“. We like to talk about indie pop but we also like to point out good examples of good music and great artists. Anyway, here’s an excerpt of the blog from the Seattle Times:

“If !!! is coasting, 10-plus years into an underexposed, overactive career, it’s only because that’s what fans demand. “Strange Weather, Isn’t It?”is their fourth full-length, and rides the same galloping disco-punk beat as their earliest work — right onto a packed dance floor, followed by the slinky guitar, rubbery bass lines and dub-inflected production that are the NYC band’s trademark. New to “Strange Weather” is vocalist Shannon Funchess, formerly of Seattle punk-funk band IMIJ, whose husky soul-diva vocals counter main man Nic Offer’s breathy jive mantras.”

Ana Them Records recently signed our latest band to our roster. We’re very pleased to welcome Campfire OK. Campfire OK is an indie band based in Seattle. They deliver exciting music performances as well as display expert skill. ATR is actually a little late to the Campfire OK party. This band has been gaining some local publicity throughout these past months. It was only due to a chance encounter between the leader of the band Mychal and the founder of ATR Cedric Ross that the two discovered they both shared a common interest in music. We think you’re going to like Campfire OK. We know we do! Stay tuned as we prepare to deliver their debut album release (CD, digital and vinyl) early 2011.
